Children are saving our world with one plant at a time.

The other day I saw the most amazing and effective presentation for preschool children on sustainability given by lovely Wendy from Composkids.

Wendy told the children that the Ozone layer protects our planet from harmful rays from the Sun. However, pollution and “yucky” gases from chimneys, pipes and cars eat up the Ozone layer. She explained that plants play an essential role as “plants suck yucky gases” and release fresh air for us to breathe. She also explained that worms play a significant role as they eat up food scraps, paper, etc and “poop out” dirt for plants to grow in. Also the children learnt very interesting facts about worms: they have no eye or nose or lungs, but have 5 hearts! The presentation was accompanied with large, clear photos and pictures, a fun song about planting seeds with a worm puppet  and then hand on experience. The children looked for worms using magnifying glasses in the pile of soil, were able to hold them. Beautiful thing is that after such a brilliant presentation most of the children were so gentle with worms and were not afraid to touch them. Then children planted seeds in small pots to take home.
I loved that through this experience young children could clearly understand and realize that each of them, no matter how young, can make a difference, that their actions can make an impact on the whole Planet for good.
